Sustainability

At Alumet, sustainability means adopting practices and technologies that meet our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. We are committed to minimizing our environmental impact through responsible resource management, innovative processes, and a focus on recycling and energy efficiency. Our approach ensures that our products and operations contribute positively to the environment, promoting long-term ecological balance and supporting the well-being of communities and the planet.

Anodizing (Al₂O₃)

Anodizing (Al₂O₃)

Electricity + Water + Aluminium
Anodizing of aluminium is done by combining raw aluminium in water with electricity resulting in rapid oxidation. Electrolysis is used to create an oxide layer in the material. The standard thickness of a layer is 20 or 25µm and can be adjusted on demand. In this process the ‘pores’ of the newly created oxide layer are open and prepared for the next step; colouring and sealing. Anodizing as done by Alumet is extremely UV Resistant and lightfast. Additionally natural anodized aluminium will stay cool even under influence of rays of the sun.

Waste

Colouring
Alumet uses non-organic pigments (metal sulphates) to bend the light and as such create colour within the anodizing layer. The amounts used during the process are so small that when melting down the anodized Aluminium these metal sulphates cannot be detected. As such, when recycled, the anodizing layer AlO₃ reverts back to Aluminium (Al) and Oxygen (O₃).

Alumet’s modern facility makes it possible to regain the non-used metal sulphates from the tanks. Using a Filter press we use the sulphate residue to create a ‘filter-cake’. This is a clay-like substance which encapsulates the residue. This cake is dried and re-used as a hardening agent and is a vital ingredient for the concrete and cement industry, this way the compound / waste product contributes to the circular economy.

Aside from the marvellous aesthetics, anodizing has product properties that play a pivotal role in creating an oxide layer that reduces the burden on the environment and has low carbon-footprint when compared to a standard class-3 powder coating. When aluminium is anodized, it undergoes a controlled electrochemical oxidation, resulting in the formation of a thin layer of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) on its surface. Basically, anodizing is Oxygen combined with Aluminium.

Alumet plays into this mindset by employing a variation of chemical / mechanical solutions and work ethics to reduce waste, lessen CO2 output and offer solutions to re-use materials to ultimately play our part into making the world a better place. We have a hyper modern waste water treatment plant which neutralizes, adds flocculants and purifies all waste water. The remaining filter cake in the form of aluminium hydroxide is used in the cement industry as a hardening agent.

Architectural anodized elegance

Our range of electrolytic colours in unparalleled, to give an example, the AluCopper is a patented Alumet colour. Moreover Alumet is one of the few companies still researching new (pre)treatments and colours. We believe in reflecting the vision of the architect and the architect believes in the natural reflection of anodized Aluminium.

Product Properties

  • Ultra Durable

Anodized aluminium is ultra durable with a lifespan lasting over 80+ years.

  • A1 fire rating (Non-combustible)

Anodised aluminium has a A1 fire-rating and is thus a safe choice for subways, Highrise and anything in between.

  • Low Maintenance (Easy to Clean)

Cleaning once a year while rinsing the windows should be sufficient.

  • Anodizing = Al₂O₃ = 100% reusable

Anodized aluminium when recycled is reverted back into oxygen and aluminium, our waste product is used as a vital ingredient for hardening concrete and cement.

  • EPD - Low carbon oxide emissions

Alumet can provide an Environmental Product Declaration which is very positive when compared to a standard powder-coating.

  • High Scratch Resistance

Anodizing (AlO) is aluminium oxide, this is the same of what a ruby, sapphire or an emerald is made of, a robust hard layer which is as tough as glass.

Low Cost of Ownership

Anodizing is durable, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and reduces maintenance needs. It is corrosion-resistant and ultra-durable and due to these facts, it keeps its colour and glance. Our products are resistant to blistering, chipping and peeling. Due to the extreme durability, there is no need to replace the facade for more than a lifetime! Our products have an extremely low maintanance regime - simply clean once a year, with mild soap. That's enough to let the facade keep its original colour and luster. Even if maintenance is lacking, we can still retain the original colour and gloss by deep cleaning with special polishing/cleaning detergents.

  1. Anodizing offers a low cost of ownership due to its durability and longevity, which significantly reduces the need for replacements and maintenance.

  2. The process enhances corrosion and wear resistance, leading to extended component lifespans.

  3. Anodizing is efficient and cost-effective, involving relatively inexpensive materials and less energy consumption compared to other coatings.

  4. Anodizing is environmentally friendly, generating minimal hazardous waste and aligning with sustainability goals. Additionally, anodized surfaces require minimal upkeep and provide versatile finishing options, further cutting down long-term costs and ensuring reliable performance
