Museum van Bommel van Dam

Museum van Bommel van Dam

The Museum Van Bommel Van Dam in Venlo is a museum of modern art that sought new housing to accommodate larger visitor numbers and establish itself as a cultural hub in the city. In 2017, the museum temporarily closed due to its relocation to the former main post office in Venlo, the Keulse Poort, a national monument dating back to 1938.

Transforming Tradition

Transforming Tradition

This national monument holds significant cultural and architectural historical value as a well-preserved example of Traditionalism architecture, designed by State Architect Hayo Hoekstra.

During its conversion into a museum, the monumental building underwent full sustainability upgrades. New additions were also designed with sustainability and circularity in mind. The sculptural art window, one of the museum's two new focal points, is clad in aluminum shingles on the exterior. In addition to this art window, the new park entrance serves as the second contemporary intervention. It's a fully recyclable product with a long lifespan and low maintenance requirements. The golden envelopes, anodized by Alumet in the colour AluGold01, are partially open and closed, creatively referencing the building's former function as a post office.
