Gorlaeus Building – Leiden University Project Description

Project Description

As part of the university’s growing Science Campus, the Gorlaeus Building was developed to bring together students, researchers, and disciplines in one central environment. The architecture focuses on transparency, interaction, and a strong material identity. One of the most striking features is the perforated aluminum facade, where design and science come together.

The panels are perforated with a Voronoi pattern, often used in biology and mathematics to represent natural distribution and structure. This visual language was chosen to reflect the faculty’s scientific focus and create a sense of rhythm across the building. Alumet anodized the panels in AluCopper 03, using a brightened finish to give the surface a refined glow. The copper-orange color adds warmth and a natural presence to the technical structure.

The anodized finish ensures durability, depth, and color retention in all weather conditions. Combined with the scientific facade concept, the material choice enhances the overall architectural vision and contributes to a high-quality, lasting result.
