OurDomain Rotterdam: where history, architecture and double anodized aluminium meet
OurDomain Rotterdam: where history, architecture and double anodized aluminium meet
Some buildings are more than just places to live. They tell a story. OurDomain Rotterdam is one of those buildings. Located in the heart of Rotterdam, the project brings new life to a historically meaningful part of the city. What was once a forgotten urban location has been transformed into a modern living environment for students and young professionals.
The building was designed by Tangram Architekten. Their vision was not only to create a contemporary residential tower, but also to connect the building to the identity of Rotterdam. A city shaped by history, reconstruction and constant movement.
A façade inspired by the traces of the past
One of the most distinctive elements of OurDomain Rotterdam is its façade. For this project, a unique pattern was created, inspired by the textures and traces connected to the Rotterdam bombardment in 1940. Instead of creating a standard façade, this historical inspiration was translated into a layered aluminium surface with depth, rhythm and movement.
The result is a façade that changes throughout the day. Depending on the angle, the daylight and the position of the viewer, the aluminium surfaces shift in tone and reflection. This gives the tower a dynamic and almost living appearance. From a distance, the façade gives the building a warm and recognizable identity within the Rotterdam skyline. Up close, the etched texture in the panels reveals the detail and craftsmanship behind the design.
The role of double anodized aluminium
For the façade, double anodized aluminium was used in the finishes AluBronze01 and AluBronze03. These bronze tones create a warm and refined look that fits well with the urban character of Rotterdam. The finishes do not only add colour, but also depth and variation. As light moves across the building, the anodized aluminium creates subtle changes in reflection and appearance.
A unique double anodizing process was applied to create this refined result. This process gives the aluminium its durable and high-quality finish, while also enhancing the visual effect of the façade. It shows how material innovation can support an architectural idea, rather than simply being a technical solution.
Architecture with a deeper meaning
What makes OurDomain Rotterdam special is the combination of storytelling, design and material use. The building is modern and functional, but it also refers to the history of the city. The façade does not tell this story in a literal way, but through texture, reflection and movement.
This makes the project a strong example of how architecture can connect the past with the future. It respects the memory of the location, while creating a new place for a young and active generation of residents.
OurDomain Rotterdam shows that a façade can be much more than the outside of a building. It can give character, create identity and tell a story that belongs to the city around it.
On 28 May, Bart Mispelblom Beyer from Tangram Architekten will speak about this project during ZAK World of Façades Rotterdam.
